Review: Flat-Out Celeste by Jessica Park.

Come see Jenn's review of Flat-Out Celeste by Jessica Park!! After reading her reviews, I can't wait to dive into this series. Check out her review of Flat-Out Love here!!

Synopsis:

Whether you were charmed by Celeste in Flat-Out Love or are meeting her for the first time, this book is a joyous celebration of differences, about battling private wars that rage in our heads and in our hearts, and—very much so— this is a story about first love.

For high-school senior Celeste Watkins, every day is a brutal test of bravery. And Celeste is scared. Alienated because she’s too smart, her speech too affected, her social skills too far outside the norm, she seems to have no choice but to retreat into isolation.

But college could set her free, right? If she can make it through this grueling senior year, then maybe. If she can just find that one person to throw her a lifeline, then maybe, just maybe.

Justin Milano, a college sophomore with his own set of quirks, could be that person to pull her from a world of solitude. To rescue her—that is, if she’ll let him.

Together, they may work. Together, they may save each other. And together they may also save another couple—two people Celeste knows are absolutely, positively flat-out in love.

Jenn's Review:

5 Flat-Out Beautiful stars
This book is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! Flat-Out Love and Flat-Out Matt are some of my very favorite books so needless to say I had very high expectations and holy moly did Jessica Park deliver!!
Celeste is now a high school senior trying to decide where she is going to attend college and trying to navigate her way through being a teenager. She is very isolated from other students and aware that she is different, that her personality is not like the teens around her. One day she receives an email from Justin, a student liaison from a college in California, and nothing will be the same for Celeste.
Justin definitely has his own set of quirks, as we quickly see within the first few emails, but I fell in love with him instantly. He is smart and funny and a little crazy and definitely all over the place but he is PERFECT! The conversations between him and Celeste just melted my heart; the two are perfect together.
I adored the relationship that these two built together and how they bring out the strengths in each other and finally Celeste begins to see herself for who she truly is, a beautiful, strong and intelligent girl with so much to offer. Her journey of self-discovery was beyond touching and had me in tears many times.
Matty!! I don’t even have to words to describe how much I LOVE Matt and was so thrilled that he was such an active part of this books and Celeste’s awakening. He truly is the perfect geek! MATT and JULIE!!! I was so happy to see them, but oh lord Ms. Park you had me stressed out for a while!
Flat-Out Celeste was so much more than a book for me, it was a journey. It was definitely full of fun moments, I laughed a lot (hello Curious George conversation), but there is also a message of acceptance and learning to love one-self. There are so many beautiful heartmelty moments that I truly became emotionally invested in these characters. I truly hope that she continues Celeste and Justin’s story because I’m surely not ready to say goodbye to them.
“I found my hinge, Matty.”

About the author:

Jessica Park is the author of the young adult novels FLAT-OUT LOVE and RELATIVELY FAMOUS; five Gourmet Girl mysteries (written as Jessica Conant-Park with her mother, mystery author Susan Conant
); and the e-shorts FACEBOOKING RICK SPRINGFIELD and WHAT THE KID SAYS (Parts 1 & 2).

Jessica grew up in the Boston area and attended Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. After spending four years in the frigid north, including suffering through one memorable Halloween blizzard, Jessica hightailed it back to the east coast. She now lives in (relatively balmy) New Hampshire with her husband, son, bananas dog named Fritzy, and two selfish cats. When not writing, Jessica indulges her healthy addictions to Facebook, Rick Springfield, and super-sweet coffee beverages.
