Pushing the Line is the fourth novella in Kimberly’s The
Line series. The series has focused on citizens in Brentsville. This story
centers on Harper McGee and Aaron Fisher. Harper is a never stay too long in
one place artist and Aaron is a Lieutenant with the Brentsville Fire
Department. They are brought together first when Aaron saves Harper, somewhat
unwillingly, from a fire and secondly when Aaron leads the construction crew
that repairs the shop Harper has just inherited from her grandmother. To say the
chemistry was incendiary would be accurate. Though neither seems willing to
cross the line initially.
Harper admits that “she’s never really lived anywhere” but
it’s easy to see that Brentsville and Luscious, the candy shop that has been in
her family for generations are the only places that give her any semblance of
peace. Her parents basically abandoned her and the only happy memories she
seems to have are of being with her grandmother, Izzy, and helping to create
magic at the candy shop. Harper is lost, but she doesn’t want to slow down long
enough to see or admit that fact, that is until she meets and begins to spend
time with Aaron. Aaron is drawn to Harper from the word go but is trying to
keep business separate from his persona life, at least until he can’t resist
anymore. While they both go into the
relationship knowing that Harper is only in town until the repairs are done and
Luscious is sold, they can’t stay away from each other. And while Harper begins
to fear what would happen if she stays, Aaron fears what his heart will feel if
she leaves. Harper is scared. Scared if she slows down and really has a life
that it will implode like her parents’ did. Scared to trust anyone but herself
because everyone in her world, save Izzy has abandoned her and felt she wasn’t
worth it. Aaron sees past all that and tries to get her to take a chance with
him. The journey to get there is filled with many a sweet, sometimes sticky and
always combustible set of interactions! I really liked this story a lot and it
was a definite makes me happy oh and by the way can I get some of those salted
caramels and throw in some pecan clusters too!! So grab your favorite sweets
and a glass (or 3) of wine and enjoy this fun read! And if you haven’t read the
other novellas in this series, no fear they can be read as standalones.
