Blog Tour: 99 Days of Laney MacGuire by Rachel Bateman. Excerpt and Giveaway.

Title: 99 Days of Laney MacGuire
Author: Rachel Bateman
Publication Date: November 14, 2013

Summary:

Laney can’t wait to spend the summer at her father’s lake resort. It’s a place where time stands still and nothing ever changes – the perfect thing for Laney after the year she just had. But when she gets there, she discovers the lodge isn’t quite as unchanging as she once thought.

Some of the differences are good, like Rory’s new look; some are bad, like whatever secret Karissa is keeping. And then some things are just confusing, like Weston.

Weston, her mysterious new co-worker, who is the cause of so many of the changes Laney hates. She wants to despise him, but she can’t deny the attraction she feels, nor the desire she has to be around the one person who didn’t know her before the summer - the one person she doesn’t have to pretend for.

Excerpt:

Here it was, my chance to ask anything I wanted to know about him, and my mind went completely blank. Not a single question. I grasped for anything to ask, but came back short every time. Weston motioned for me to sit down, and I found myself crossing the porch. Suddenly I was on the top step, so close to him I could feel his heat through my clothes.
“Truth?” he asked.
“Please.”
“Your dad’s in trouble, Laney.”
“What? No he’s not.”
“Yes, he is. He doesn’t want you all to know, but he’s in deep trouble. This place has been pulling him down since he bought it. If he doesn’t turn things around, he’ll lose it all. He can’t afford to keep operating like this. With Angie and the baby, he has to be able to make it work.”
Time stood still, and my mind strained to comprehend what he was telling me. How could I have missed this? I was in charge of the books, the paperwork—I should have caught it. Craig needed help, and I was too dense to even realize it.
I asked the only question I could think of: “If he’s so bad off, how can he hire you? Your family name is synonymous with Luxury Hotel. Not the kind of thing some poor guy with a failing resort can afford.”
He coughed. “Well...I’m not being paid, actually.”
“What?”
“Angie helped set it up so my work this summer applies to my MBA. I’m technically schooling right now.”
“And I guess it’s not like you need the money anyway.”
He stiffened beside me, his back straightening. “That’s...not entirely true.”
“Oh, very funny. What, you can’t get a new Masserati with your trust fund?”
“Shite, Laney, you are a piece of work, aren’t you? My father cut me off when I took this job instead of working for him for the summer. I’m schooling on scholarship and fixing this place up because Angie asked me to. Sure, I have some money, but it’s not like I’m a Rockafeller.” He stood to leave, and my hand shot up to grab his before I even knew what I was doing.
“I’m sorry,” I said. “I didn’t realize.”
“You don’t bother to realize. Not everyone is against you. Someday you’ll see that.” He pulled his hand out of mine. “I’ve got work to do.”
He was gone, and I was left on the front porch, the truth of his words seeping into me like a stain.
