Jenn Donald's Review of Flat-Out Love by Jessica Park

Review by the totally awesome Jenn Donald

I am Flat-Out IN LOVE with this book.

Flat-Out Love became an instant favorite book for me. The writing is beautiful and smart and the characters are SIMPLY AMAZING. This is one of those books where 5 stars are not enough - I. Need. More. Stars!

The characters in this book are absolutely brilliant, the three dimentional ones and the flat ones alike. I was immediately captivated by Julie and once I met Matt I knew right then and there that this book was going on my favorites list and he would be a book boyfriend.

"Yes, I said hence...I think its making a comeback."

Julie is a smart young girl off to college for the first time and is in a new city. She soon discovers that the plans she thought she made are, well, pretty much non-exsistent. With the help of her mothers college friend Julie has a place to stay with her family for the year. This family is not what it seems though. Matt is a smart, cute, and somewhat nerdy college student himself, attending MIT. He also happens to wear the BEST T-SHIRTS EVER!

"Nietzsche Is My Homeboy"

Matt is one of my favorite book boyfriend characters. He is nerdy in all the perfect ways! He's one of the most caring characters who does everything he can, and sacrifices so much of his own life to take care of his family. He's so witty and I not only love his interactions with Julie but his Facebook posts had me giggling nonstop.

Matt's younger sister Celeste is extremely bright and beautiful but there's something different about her. She speaks like an adult way before her time and well, she carries around a life-size cardboard cut out of her oldest brother Finn, who Julie is told is off traveling the world. The family doesn't talk much about "Flatt-Finn" or why he is so necessary to Celeste; they stay away from any deep discussions. Julie finds a way to connect with Finn through Facebook and finds that she is falling in love with him. There are family secrets that have to be revealed though, and once those secrets are known true feelings are discovered.

This is such a beautiful and intelligent book that takes the reader beyond the surface of relationships down to the deep heart squeezing truths. There is more than one story in Flat-Out Love. It's not just a boy meets girl and falls in love book; it's a book that takes you into the relationships of everyone involved. This book made me laugh, hard and more than once, it made my heart squeeze inside my chest, and it made me cry. I quickly fell for every character in this book and loved them through to the very last word. There isn't one thing that I don't like about this book and I know it's one I will reread just to experience it again and again.

"But that's what love does to you. Gut wrenching, overpowering crushing, fulfilling, complex, bring-you-to-your-knees love."
